SUMMARY:Diasporic Investment in Homeland Politics
DESCRIPTION:Join us for the March edition of Africa Talks. We will be talking about the diaspora and conflict resolution in Cameroon\, Central Africa and what motivates individuals in the diaspora to intervene in the politics of their homeland. \nWhile much of the literature on group mobilization in social science\, particularly analyses of African states\, highlights ethnic cleavages as the primary sources of grievance and conflict\, the role of migrants and individuals within diaspora communities in sustaining and shaping mobilization in their countries of origin gets far less attention. Leveraging the varying degrees of diasporans’ social and political integration in their host countries\, the speaker explores how critical moments and evolving political dynamics\, particularly mass protests\, trigger deviations from baseline patterns of homeland investment. \nJoin the conversation on conflict\, gender\, and economic resilience in West Africa and in the diaspora. \n\n5pm: Doors open for food and networking\n5:30pm: Presentations & Panel discussion\n6pm: Audience joins the conversation (Q&A)\n\nFeatured Speakers: \n\nNorah-Frida Tebid – doctoral candidate in the Department of Political Science at UW-Madison\nYvonne Tazeh – Co-Founder & Portfolio Manager\,  TT Investment Concepts and Cameroonian community leader and longtime Madison resident\n\nModerated by: Erica Ayisi – PBS Wisconsin Indigenous Affairs Reporter \nWho Should Attend: \n\nAnyone curious about African cultures and diaspora experiences and relations\nResearchers\, faculty\, and practitioners interest in conflict resolution\, bilingual governance systems in Africa\nAnyone seeking community connection\nNonprofit professionals and community organizers\nNeighbors who want to understand Madison’s growing diversity\n\nThis event is free and open to all. African food will be served. \nAbout Africa Talks Community Lectures: \nOur monthly lecture series that brings together scholars\, community leaders\, and neighbors to explore the richness of African cultures and the lived experiences of our diaspora community. SUMMARY:Africa Talks: Market Transformation - How Women in Mali’s Dairy Sector Respond to Armed Conflict
DESCRIPTION:Join us for the February edition of Africa Talks. We will be talking about the dairy industry in Mali and how Malian women are responding to the conflict within the sector they have long dominated. \nFor more than a decade\, central Mali has been plagued by chronic insecurity and insurgency. Women’s experiences of this violence are often reduced to statistics that emphasize harm\, overlooking how they navigate insecurity in their everyday lives. By tracing these changes\, Emily hopes to highlight women not as victims of conflict\, but as savvy economic actors actively adapting to instability\, reworking markets\, and redefining resilience under conditions of protracted violence. \nJoin the conversation on conflict\, gender\, and economic resilience in West Africa and in the diaspora. \n\n5pm: Doors open for food and networking\n5:30pm: Presentations & Panel discussion\n6pm: Audience joins the conversation (Q&A)\n\nFeatured Speakers: \n\nEmily Fornof – doctoral candidate in the Department of Geography at UW-Madison.\nAhoifa Kouegane – Workforce Development Specialist\, Mali community leader and longtime Madison resident\n\nModerated by: Erica Ayisi – PBS Wisconsin Indigenous Affairs Reporter \nWho Should Attend: \n\nAnyone curious about African cultures and diaspora experiences\nResearchers\, faculty\, and practitioners working on conflict\, migration\, food systems\, or women’s economic empowerment\nAnyone seeking community connection\nNonprofit professionals and community organizers\nNeighbors who want to understand Madison’s growing diversity\n\nThis event is free and open to all.
